Strategic Heating & Air is your one stop shop for the home: heating and air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, and new construction. On the HVAC side we install, replace, repair, and maintain gas furnaces, oil furnaces, heat pumps, dual-fuel systems, central air conditioning, and ductless mini-splits. We're a Carrier dealer, we handle indoor air quality, and we back it all with a preventive maintenance program. True to our name, we're your men for all seasons, ready when the heat quits in January or the AC quits in July.
Yes. We install and replace gas and oil furnaces, heat pumps, dual-fuel systems, central air conditioners, and ductless mini-splits for homes across Southside Virginia and northern North Carolina. As a Carrier dealer we offer a broad range of energy-efficient equipment to fit your home and your budget, with furnace AFUE ratings up to 90 percent. We size every system to the house instead of guessing, so you get even comfort and lower bills year round.
Yes. Our technicians service every major brand and model of furnace, heat pump, and air conditioner, whether it was installed last year or fifteen years ago. That includes gas and oil furnaces and all types of heat pumps. When a system is on its last leg, we'll tell you straight and walk you through repair versus replacement, instead of selling you parts for a unit that won't make it through another winter.
Virginia summers are humid and winters are dry, and both extremes are hard on the air inside your home. We install and service the iWave air purification system, which reduces odors and allergens and helps kill mold, bacteria, and viruses, along with upgraded filtration and humidity control that works with your existing HVAC. If anyone in the home deals with allergies, asthma, or constant congestion, this is where we'd start.
Yes. Along with heating and cooling, we handle residential plumbing, so you don't have to juggle separate companies for one project. Because we're licensed across HVAC, plumbing, and electrical, a job that crosses trades can run under one roof, one schedule, and one point of contact. Give us a call to talk through what you need.
Yes. Our Preventive Maintenance Program is the best way to keep a system running for years instead of failing on the coldest or hottest day of the year. Members get priority service when something breaks, plus scheduled tune-ups, ideally one in spring before cooling season and one in fall before heating season. Regular maintenance catches small problems early, keeps efficiency up, and helps protect your manufacturer warranty.
Yes. We provide free estimates on installation and replacement projects, including new furnaces, heat pumps, AC systems, ductless mini-splits, indoor air quality upgrades, and new construction work. For diagnostic visits on existing equipment, a service call fee may apply, and we credit it toward the cost of any repair you authorize.
It depends on the system type, size, efficiency rating, and the condition of your existing ductwork. As a rough guide for our area, a gas furnace replacement often runs about $4,500 to $8,500 installed, a heat pump replacement about $6,000 to $11,000, and a central AC replacement about $5,500 to $9,500. High-efficiency and dual-fuel systems run higher, and ductless mini-split pricing depends on how many zones you need. We give you a free, written, itemized quote after we see the home.
It depends on what's failed. A capacitor is usually in the low hundreds. A blower motor, furnace igniter, or fan motor runs a few hundred more. A refrigerant leak repair and recharge varies with the leak and the amount of refrigerant needed. A failed compressor or a cracked heat exchanger on an older system is usually the point where we have an honest conversation about repair versus replacement. The diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair if you move forward.
Financing may be available on qualifying installation and replacement projects. The best thing to do is ask when we provide your estimate, and we'll walk you through the current options so you can choose a comfortable monthly payment instead of paying for the whole project up front.
Estimates on installation and replacement work are always free. For diagnostic visits on existing equipment, a service call fee may apply, and we credit it toward the cost of any repair you authorize. If there's ever a fee for an after-hours call, we tell you up front before we head out.
Our current promotions change with the season, so the best place to check is a quick phone call or our website. Preventive Maintenance Program members get priority service and savings on repairs, and we periodically run discounts on new system installations and seasonal tune-ups. Ask us what's running this month before you book.

You can reach us two ways: call (434) 222-6928 or (434) 222-7419, or send a request through the contact form on our website. For a system that's completely down, especially in extreme heat or cold, call us directly so we can get you on the schedule as fast as possible.
When the schedule allows, yes. Calling first thing in the morning gives you the best shot at a same-day visit, especially during the peak of summer and the coldest stretches of winter when call volume is highest. For a system that's completely out, tell us when you call and we'll do our best to work you in.
Our office is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and we answer phones and online requests throughout the day. When your heating or cooling goes down, our promise is simple: no matter the time of day or the day of the week, call us, and we'll respond as quickly as we can.
When your system goes down, we treat it like the emergency it is, because a house with no heat in January or no AC in July isn't something that can wait. Our promise is straightforward: no matter the time of day or the day of the week, call Strategic Heating & Air and we'll respond as fast as we can. Preventive Maintenance Program members get priority when the schedule is full.
First, check the basics. Make sure the thermostat is set to "heat" and the batteries aren't dead. Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker, and flip it fully off, then back on. Change the air filter if it's been more than a month or two, since a clogged filter is a surprisingly common cause. If you have a gas furnace and you smell gas or it won't ignite, stop there and call us. If none of the basics restore heat, call (434) 222-6928 and we'll get a technician out. Don't keep running a system that's making grinding or banging noises.
Start with the simple stuff. Set the thermostat to "cool" a few degrees below the room temperature and check its batteries. Look at the breaker panel for a tripped breaker and reset it once. Replace a dirty air filter, then walk outside and clear leaves, grass, and debris away from the outdoor unit. If you see ice on the system or it's blowing warm air, shut it off so you don't damage the compressor, and call (434) 222-6928. We'll find the root cause and get you cool again.
A frozen AC almost always traces back to one of three things: a clogged air filter choking off airflow, a low refrigerant charge from a slow leak, or a failing blower. A system that runs nonstop without cooling is usually low on refrigerant, has a dirty outdoor coil, or is undersized for the heat load. Don't keep running a frozen unit, because the ice can damage the compressor. Shut it off, let it thaw for a few hours, and call us to find the real cause.
If you smell gas, get everyone out of the house first, then call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Don't flip light switches, light a match, or use the phone inside, and don't start a car in an attached garage. Once the utility confirms the area is safe, call Strategic Heating & Air for licensed repair of your gas furnace or gas line. Your safety comes before the equipment, every time.
Response time depends on the time of day, the weather, and how far you are from our nearest available technician. Calls in our core area around South Boston and Halifax County are usually fastest, and we dispatch the closest available technician to keep your wait as short as possible. When you call, let us know the system is completely down so we can prioritize it.
Our experienced team can handle all of your questions. Send us a message.
